Asthma is a killer

Did. You know that asthma kills 10 individuals every day in the US?  Mostly females.

No one can forget the case back in 2014 when Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York City was shouting, “I can’t breath”, “I can’t breath” repeatedly leading up to his death while a police officer held him in a choke hold.  The difference with him and someone suffering from asthma is that their choke hold is an “inflammation” that blokes their airway preventing them from breathing without much warning to themselves or you.

What is asthma?

Last month we interviewed Dr. Mayank Shukla, MD, one of the leading experts in his field fighting to save lives and attack one of the asthmatic triggers - allergies.

“ Asthma is a chronic airways disease resulting from a person's airways becoming inflamed, narrowed and swollen, thus producing extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe.”

“An average of 1 out of every 12 school-aged children has asthma. 3.4 percent of children with asthma are more likely to use a hospital emergency room.”Just a month ago I witnessed a Mexican mother at the hospital reception desk trying to get a form to remit her son who had been out of school since his asthma attack. She was explaining that her son could not return to school without that form. How many school days did he have to miss?

Can Asthma be prevented?

“Doctors and patients must work together if we are going to challenge our understanding of asthma and change the focus from long-term treatment to prevention and cure.”

Asthma is not just one disease but the end stages of many diseases and triggers. It is believed to be brought on by a lowered or unhealthy immune system - the causes of which are a domino impact.  A ‘combination of asthma and obesity can trigger other metabolic diseases in adulthood, including pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.Asthma can be treated but can we avoid the poplar triggers?
